Reporting to the Senior Director of Development - Marine Sciences, the Development Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the fundraising activities and objectives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography development team. The Coordinator will manage and implement cultivation, fundraising, and activities that support development objectives, with a focus on special events. Will work with Advancement, University Development and unit colleagues and supporters to ensure success of development events, activities and programs.
The Coordinator will manage all administrative duties as assigned, develop and maintain event and donor-related reporting processes, and will be responsible for all associated communications. Maintain liaison relationship with Marketing and Communications and Advancement's Offices of Donor Relations, Donor and Fund Stewardship, and Special Events and Protocol. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional, to provide comprehensive coordination and management oversight of moderately complex and/or medium-size events.
Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends that coincide with events and meetings.
Must have access to reliable transportation to travel and transport materials to off-site meetings and events.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of event planning and public relations, including event design, organization and production.
Demonstrated skill in effectively meeting budget and time constraints.
Proven organizational and project management skills to work successfully with clients to produce high quality events that meet client needs and appropriately represent the campus for fundraising events.
Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of volunteer recruitment, supervision, motivation and evaluation.
Skills to provide excellent donor stewardship. Ability to effectively work with invited guests, donors, government officials and university VIPs.
Knowledge of crowd management, crowd safety protocols, security and emergency procedures related to small, medium and large scale gatherings.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse populations with competing priorities. Highly developed interpersonal communication skills including political acumen and social perceptiveness.
Highly developed judgment, decision-making and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills, including skill in determining those issues/problems that need to be brought to management's attention.
Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously. Skill at responding effectively to priorities and setting deadlines.
Experience maintaining a high standard of productivity within a broad scope of responsibility despite frequent interruptions.

Must have a valid California driver's license.
Occasional overnight travel to event sites outside of San Diego county. Must be flexible in order to work at multiple work sites.
Must be able to transport event supplies/materials from vehicle to event site using a cart or other means.
