Duties: 1. Facilitates the daily receipt of a high volume of diagnostic samples (including highly pathogenic materials and various zoonotic pathogens) in a BSL2 facility. Maintain certification in Category A and B Infectious Substances and Dry Ice Shipping, as required by the Department of Transportation and US Government Regulations. 2. Adhere to strict safety protocols (as per the Department of Environmental Health and Safety) as well as section specific standards to ensure the prevention of disease, by planning and overseeing laboratory cleanliness and proper sample handling. Ensure compliance with these protocols so that standards are maintained and national accreditation is not jeopardized. 3. Independently interpret case submissions, sample data, sample type, integrity, and client history to determine a case-specific course of action and testing procedures. Interview clients in person and over the phone to collect and interpret clinical symptoms and case history. Using sound judgement and work experience in the veterinary field, independently triage and prioritize case work load and test requests for downstream sections. 4. Successfully navigate and utilize the VDL’s reporting computer database – Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) – to create unique case numbers, track diagnostic samples, enter test requests and sample date, and to report test results. Evaluate data generated for errors and notify Section Head or Faculty Advisor for any inconsistencies. Uses required skills in the effective use of computer hardware and associated software. 5. Independently prepare samples for analysis for a large variety of test methods while adhering to section specific standards and protocols. Perform processing of tissue samples for molecular diagnostics, bacteriology, and necropsy. This will include, but is not limited to, tissue trimming and sectioning, sample swabbing and plate streaking, preparing sample aliquots and calculating serial dilutions, and media selection and preparation. 6. Perform routine and complex, multi-step, clinical diagnostic laboratory procedures for bacteriology and molecular diagnostics, for the detection of a variety of bacterial/viral/parasitic pathogens causing diseases in domestic and wild animals. Serve as back up for these tests as needed. Undergo training by senior laboratory technicians to perform assigned work independently, and demonstrate yearly proficiency on all assigned tests and procedures. 7. Maintain solid working knowledge on the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and analyzers. Troubleshoot equipment errors, schedule and perform equipment preventative maintenance or repairs as needed, and schedule equipment calibration as assigned by Section Head and/or Faculty Advisor. 8. Maintain laboratory supply inventory, to include reagents, controls, and test kits. Monitor testing reagent and solution volumes, and calculate and prepare new stocks as required to complete testing on schedule. 9. Attend and participate in laboratory staff meetings, work-related educational meetings, and Continuing Education and Professional Development workshops. Perform other work as assigned by Section Head and/or Faculty Advisor to include, but limited to, serving as document manager, equipment manager, inventory manager, and section safety representative. 10. Receive training on and maintain an active role in Quality Assurance/Quality Control, such as investigating non-conformances, root-cause analysis, corrective/preventative action response, and authoring and editing section specific documents. Proficient with QA/QC computer program, Q-Pulse.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field of science, or a combination of education and related scientific experience to total 4 years.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in a BSL2 laboratory. 1-2 years of previous experience working in a laboratory. Experience with quality control software. Experience with laboratory management software.
