This posting is for Ph.D. Research Scientist in the Specialty Coatings Product Development Group at Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, TN. The position will have responsibility for applications research and development supporting architectural markets. The successful applicant will be expected to translate market needs into product concepts and subsequently develop the concepts into commercial products. Candidate must be flexible, proactive, and professional, with experience in polymer synthesis and characterization, acrylic emulsions, acrylic latex formulation and coatings. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
Serve as a technical expert for acrylic monomers, polymers, emulsions and applications to architectural paint
Develop a fundamental understanding of structure-property-performance relationships of monomers, additives and coating resins
Translate fundamental knowledge of polymer materials and functional additives to the development of new applications and the identification of new market spaces
Identify needs and opportunities through discussion with customers, sales and marketing personnel with the ability to translate those needs into innovative product solutions
Propose a course of action based on data analysis
Lead multidisciplinary new product development project teams
Communicate results through effective written documentation and oral presentations
Some travel for customer interactions and technical conferences will be required
Lead multidisciplinary product and application development project teams. Guide and interact with lab staff and collaborate with other researchers, marketing and business personnel from concept through commercialization.
Identify and implement or develop experimental methods to quantify targeted customer-relevant application performance attributes.
Create model formulations to highlight performance of raw materials in a market-relevant manner for targeted applications.
Propose courses of action based on data analysis.
Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science from an accredited college or university
Minimum of 10 years industrial experience preferred; Minimum 5 years' experience acceptable if exceptional accomplishments can be demonstrated through patents, publications or industry awards
The Candidate Must Possess:
Strong working knowledge of emulsion polymerization, acrylic latexes, resin application and coating characterization.
Basic understanding of a broad range of analytical techniques, including rheology, thermal analysis, and various chromatography and spectroscopies.
Previous industrial product or application development experience is highly desirable.
Ability to establish networks of experts in academia, industry, and government labs.
Independent and driven individual with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously with a focus on results.
