The President is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the organization, the internal staff and the Chamber membership. Leads with direction from the Board of Directors and Executive Committee to accomplish the Chamber mission, long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies.
Leadership of the Organization
Provides leadership and management to ensure that the mission, core values and over all “statement of work” for the organization are put into practice.
With the support of the Board of Directors, Creates and communicates a clear vision for the organization.
Leads the Board and Staff in governance and operational system delivery and serves as ex-officio member of all committees.
Is accountable for achieving the overall measures of success for the organization.
Identifies trends, opportunities and threats in order to lead change efforts necessary for growth and strength.
Directs and organizes strategic planning which improves the organizational needs and aids in accomplishing objectives and policies.
Creates structures which ensure the highest level of business ethics and integrity, both internally and among Chamber member firms.
Develops and implements policies and procedures, including those adopted by the Board of Directors, that will improve operations and overall effectiveness of the organization.
Ensures organization stability and growth in the areas of operating revenues, membership increases and staff retention.
Builds strategic alliances which expand resources and opportunities for the membership and the community.
Leadership of People
Creates an atmosphere of respect and trust in order to empower all team members to grow, develop new skills and work collaboratively.
Uses motivational methods in order to lead a high-performance team. Recruits and retains required members of the team and provides mentoring as a cornerstone to the career development program.
Encourage problem-solving responsibilities at all levels of the organization, establishing clear guidelines for decision-making authority, and take action appropriate to executive-level decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Achieve organizational goals for membership recruitment and retention.
Consistently promote membership benefits throughout the state, utilizing a variety of communication tools.
Serve as President of the organization, leading operations and staff activities.
Serve as Chief Executive Officer, providing leadership on strategy and governance
Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s budget and business plan.
Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the Board and staff in performing their responsibilities.
Adheres to the spending authority requirements as established by the Executive Committee
Increase revenue through memberships, events and other sources.
Create and maintain appropriate organizational structure, compensation policy and staff management.
Translate Board policies and goals into procedures and measurable outcomes.
Serves as the chief spokesperson for the Chamber and communicates the organization’s positions on member, business and policy issues regionally and nationally.
Provide for the representation of the Chamber at appropriate state-wide events and media opportunities.
Provide oversight and leadership to Chamber committees, (i.e., legislative affairs, economic development, education, workforce, health care and insurance, natural resources, taxation and transportation and infrastructure.), ensuring overall goal completion annually.
Maintain systems and cycles of strategic planning, tactical planning and organizational review.
Overall responsibility for annual review of operations including risk management, facility management and regulatory compliance.
Recommends qualified personnel for ND Chamber Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
Performs additional tasks and duties as appropriately assigned or requested.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages direct reports and outside Consultants, and is responsible for overall direction, coordination and evaluation of staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include talent acquisition and training employees: planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, resolving problems and conducting exit interviews.

Education and Experience Required:
A bachelor’s degree; or 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
A proven history of progressive fiscal and human resource management experience in a Chamber or closely related environment.
A clear track record in establishing visionary leadership with forward-looking management practices which resulted in demonstrated success for an organization.
Proficient in a variety of current technologies.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents.
Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries and complaints.
Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations.
Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:The work environment requires both inside and outdoor exposure. The noise level is moderate. It is a diversified job requiring sustained mental effort, significant interaction with others, and regular occurrence of work days extending beyond eight hours.
