The Platform Services Director in Infrastructure Technology services (ITS) leads an Infrastructure Platforms team that is responsible for the management and delivery of key IT infrastructure technologies for Harvard University IT (HUIT). These platforms are foundational to the way we provide highly scalable and well-managed IT services to the academic and administrative community at Harvard.
Supported platforms include:
An enterprise-class storage and backup environment built primarily on EMC, NetApp, AWS S3, and Aveer
Hosted servers and computing through the use of AWS, Cisco UCS, and VMWare-based virtualization environment
Systems development and administration for several foundational platform technologies, including Citrix, InfoBlox, and mail relays.
The Platform team also supports and extends the use of automation, configuration management, and analytics through the deployment and use of Ansible, Nagios, Splunk, and ITS's self-service/automation capabilities.
Focused on service management and project delivery, the Services Director will co-lead the ITS Platform team with the Platform Technology Director. Successful partnership here is based on building an effective partnership through aligned goals and a clear definition of each manager's role and areas of responsibility. Both roles report to the Managing Director for HUIT Infrastructure Technology Services.
As the Service Owner for ITS Platform managed services and offerings in the HUIT Service Catalog, the Director is responsible for all stages in their lifecycle: strategy, design, transition, operations, and continuous improvement. This Service Owner role is also accountable for ensuring successful resolution of incidents, problems, and changes by the team, including major incident escalation and ownership. The role will partner with the Managing Director, ITS Business Operations, and HUIT Finance to provide budget management for IT DevOps services.
The Director is charged with building and leading a high performing team of approximately 10 to 15 staff. In doing so, the role will provide professional development and performance management for the team. This will include talent development, cross-training to ensure robust coverage across the team, addressing performance issues, and coordinating the formal and informal training of staff to develop news skills for HUIT's cloud, datacenter, and automation goals.
In managing these environments, this team will:
Develop, regularly update, and implement an enterprise strategy that reflects the latest technologies available and the most cost effective solutions, processes and policies
Include cloud solutions that are applicable and available or a path to cloud solutions
Manage Level 2 and 3 support for the existing environments
Handle all related requests, tickets and projects, which are prioritized through regular reviews
Provide direct vendor interface for support, escalations, and budgetary requirements

The Director will regularly engage with HUIT leadership, with our key customer contacts, and with relevant governance groups to effectively balance customer priorities, operational work, migration activities, and compliance requirements. A critical success factor for this role will be effective resource management of the team, clear communications, and building trust with both partners and customers.
The Director should embrace and drive change throughout the organization, be willing to break down silos to improve customer service, and effectively communicate with partners and customers.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role.
Minimum of 7-10 years IT project and staff management experience
Bachelor's degree required, preferably with coursework in computer science, information systems or information technology.
Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in an IT operating environment
The following qualifications are preferred:
Demonstrated strong organizational skills are a must with proven ability to lead/manage change.
Experience in developing and implementing service recovery models, IT policies, procedures and standards.
Ability to develop, manage and communicate a budget and work with financial analyst to develop rate models is critical.
Exceptional written, interpersonal and presentation/public speaking communication skills are all important to success.
Must have excellent technology and project management skills, demonstrated ability to manage through influence and negotiation.
Broad knowledge and understanding of emerging technologies, Cloud and DevOps concepts, standards, and tools.
Experience with ITIL and adoption of standard service management practices, Agile development methodology, technology trends and their applicability in a university setting.
