The division of Health Sciences Building Management, part of Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities (HSAS&F), currently has several outstanding opportunities for Temporary Security Guards.
These highly-motivated, friendly and detail-oriented individuals will provide security for the Health Sciences Complex, which includes Magnuson Health Sciences Center, the W. H. Foege Building, South Campus Center and the ARCF. This position reports to the Security Sergeant within the Building Management Division of Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities. These are fixed duration appointments through June 2018, working a mix of evening (1500-2330) and night (2300-0730) shifts. These positions are part of a pilot project to provide additional security to the HSB complex, the level of security and long term needs are being evaluated during FY18. Pilot program ends June 30, 2018.
The primary focus of HSAS&F is providing proactive, personal and effective support to our customers. This position is part of a high volume and fast paced division; this candidate must be both decisive and flexible. HSAS&F is dedicated to the success of each team member, striving for excellence and delivering quality customer service.
A successful candidate will work collaboratively with management to ensure that the complex needs of the Health Sciences schools, upper campus departments and outside organizations are met in a proactive manner. The person in this position will work in close partnership with other HSAS&F divisions, Custodial Services, Facilities Services, EH&S, CAAMS, ARCF occupants, UWPD and UWMC Public Safety to ensure the smooth and safe daily operation of the facility. The Security Guard must have a strong customer-driven, solution-oriented approach to balancing the needs of all units and personnel in Health Sciences.
Typical duties include responding to radio dispatches from UW Police Department; admitting staff, faculty, and students to spaces within the complex; responding to alarms; monitoring security camera video feeds; identifying building maintenance problems; ensuring that necessary repairs are completed; checking that exterior and perimeter security doors are secured; and checking that interior doors are secured at night.
The Security Guard is expected to patrol the Health Sciences buildings and exterior grounds at all times when not performing other work-related duties. The Security Guard will deliver excellent customer service while ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants. Demonstrate effective coordination with other UW service units, as needed.
Duties also include operating security software, such as PicturePerfect, OnGuard or Avigilon; maintaining logs of all activities; communicating with departmental administrators via email; and interpreting and applying rules and procedures. Attend continuing education courses as required by regulations and at supervisor's request. Meet attendance expectations, to include minimal unplanned absences.

Minimum Requirements: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license; no previous felony convictions. Must be able to patrol on foot through a typical eight-hour shift and climb ladders, if necessary. After receiving training, must be able to safely operate a Segway transporter within buildings and on exterior grounds. Must communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English with supervisor, UW Police Department radio dispatchers, building occupants and other customers.
Desirable: Two years of security experience. Strong computing skills, in order to operate security software, create log entries and send email notifications. Prior experience using Segway transporters safely within buildings.
