The Web Application Developer is responsible for development and support of the UW Medicine Public site, the UW Medicine Intranets, and/or creation and maintenance of custom .NET MVC applications. More specifically, the position will be responsible for maintaining and improving UW Medicine's world-class web technologies, supporting tens of thousands of internal and external users every day. This includes modeling our existing business needs into our platforms (internal and external), as well as innovating and driving the next generation of public and private web applications for UW Medicine.
This position will be an active part of the web development team responsible for designing, developing and deploying new features for UW Medicine internal and public facing web sites. Development functions will be performed in partnership with IT Services customer groups and internal IT staff including other developers, project managers and operational staff.
The Web Application Developer must work with and reconcile the demands of a large and varied constituency of internal customers across UW Medicine - all within the context of a constrained financial environment. Additionally, this position must manage a large number of activities and projects concurrently, and rely upon excellent interpersonal skills to ensure that initiatives are completed in a quality manner on time and within budget.
Web technologies is a rapidly changing technology space that requires a strong commitment to maintaining current skills. In addition to this personal learning commitment, the Sr. Web Application Developer role has responsibility for helping the team stay current via presentations and knowledge sharing in team meetings, design reviews, lunch and learns, etc.
The successful completion of this positions duties is critical to the ongoing business operations of many departments across UW Medicine. This position supports systems used by both internal and external customers of UW Medicine and as such impacts revenue recognition and the conversion of web users to patients. Unmanaged or poorly designed features will degrade the performance and utility of the public facing web site (http://uwmedicine.org) having direct impact on not only the conversion of patients but also the general reputation of UW Medicine. Internally, unmanaged or poorly designed services cost employees valuable time, potentially impacting patient care.
Enhance Production Systems (55%)
Work with Lead Application Services Analysts to clarify requirements for requested system enhancements.
Estimate number of hours to build a solution based on the approved design.
Build system based on approved designs and review with lead and/or senior software engineer.
Report work against assigned tasks.
Complete unit testing and notify QA of readiness for integrated testing.
Resolve defects based on feedback from the QA analyst.
Deploy solutions upon successful completion of testing.
Support Production Systems – Internal and External Websites and Web Applications (25%)
Contact system users to understand any reported issues or concerns with existing production systems.
Determine whether the reported issues is a defect or a request for enhanced functionality.
Support and maintain systems within the established service level agreement for the applicable system.
Design and implement appropriate fixes following established design/build standards and operational processes and procedures for the team.
Document Production Systems (10%)
Create documentation of assigned production systems per established documentation standards.
Maintain documentation over time as systems are enhanced.
Review documentation with software engineer to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Team Operational Improvements Projects (10%)
Work as assigned to implement desired operational improvements based on project planning provided by the software engineer and/or the team manager.
What you'll bring to the table: (minimum requirements)
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.
6+ years experience must include the following:
6+ years professional IT experience designing, developing and maintaining web sites or custom applications with browse based UI.
4+ years professional IT experience including one or more of the following:
Developing and maintaining public facing websites including participation in monitoring of user activity, creation and monitoring of marketing campaigns and SEO OR
Developing and maintaining SharePoint websites as an intranet collaboration platform to include search configuration and custom development OR
Developing and maintaining MS SQL based data rich applications including creation of stored procedures with complex SQL joins.
Strong knowledge of one or more of the following:
.NET application development with C#.
.NET MVC application development with C#.
Demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following:
Web-enabled database connectivity.
Responsive design and accessibility standards.
Modern UX design and web browsers.
Web front-end frameworks such as Bootstrap, Foundation, Semantic UI, Pure, and UIkit.
Ideally, you'll also have: (desired skills and experience)
SharePoint 2010/2013 development experience.
SharePoint FAST Search experience.
Knowledge of XML.
Knowledge of JSON.
WordPress, Drupal and Joomla experience.
Experience in a team development environment using Microsoft TFS.
