BUILD: BUILDing Bridges Mentor (full-time 40 hours, non-exempt)
BUILD engages at-risk youth in the school and on the streets so they can realize their educational and career potential and contribute to the stability, safety, and well-being of our communities. The Building Bridges Mentor will engage at risk youth in schools in order to identify issues, seek solutions, mediate disputes, demonstrate BARJ (Balance and Restorative Justice) methods and best practices as alternatives to traditional disciplinary consequences and encourage educational success. The Building Bridges Mentor will establish and maintain rapport with Cook County Juvenile Detention Center identified students to work with them to turn from negative behaviors, gang membership and destructive activities. The Building Bridges Mentor will engage youth in the home, on the streets, in-school sessions and/or after-school activities, in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, in order to identify issues, seek solutions, mediate disputes, mitigate non-compliance with court mandates, and encourage education.
Youth Work/Youth Development
Identifies and recruits participants for caseload and generates and maintains life plans for each participant on caseload. Collect baseline and year end data on academic, interpersonal and pro social behaviors.
Works within the target schools, communities and with the CCJDC to diffuse violent situations, mediate disputes among youth including rival gangs.
Assists participants in re-enrolling in school after detention
Identifies and refers participants to part time employment or internship opportunities
Submits statistics and reports to Building Bridges coordinator on a bi-weekly and monthly basis and/or as needed.
Operates professionally in the field on a flexible time schedule, which includes late evenings and weekends.
Works with school administration to maintain a healthy partnership with constant communication.
Works with parents and family to maintain a healthy relationship with constant communication and referral of services.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Communication and Relationship Management:
Represents the agency to broaden community awareness and support, interpreting the agency’s programs and services.
Updates caseload on a weekly basis and submits information to Manager of Intervention Services.
Attends departmental and agency-wide staff meetings, as scheduled, and agency wide events, as required.
Maintains knowledge current in the field including but not limited to, participation in coursework, seminars and workshops.
Exemplifies the mission, vision and values of the agency
Maintains knowledge current in the field including, but not limited to, attendance at seminars, workshops, etc.
Maintains knowledge current on agency’s theories, methodologies and best practices
Attends departmental and agency-wide staff meetings, as scheduled and agency-wide events as required
Performs other job related duties as requested, required and/or assigned
Participate in agency-wide fundraising events
Maintains relationships with various partners including, but not limited to, schools, government agencies and community based organizations
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, or related field .
Minimum two years of experience working with inner-city youth in a human service setting, social service setting, or related field.
Must have car for transportation to multiple sites / home visits.
Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Automobile is required with insurance and a valid driver’s license.
Maintain respectful and appropriate relationships with program participants, all levels of agency staff and the various publics of the agency, demonstration sensitivity to all ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds.
Must be willing to travel daily.
Must be passionate about youth development work.
Must pass State Background Check & Federal Fingerprints.
