The Office of Professional Regulation has a vacancy for an Assistant Ethics Counsel. Applicants must be an attorney licensed in the State of Iowa and in good standing. Additional requirements are described below. The position is located in Des Moines, Iowa. The person in this position is appointed by the Director, Office of Professional Regulation, subject to approval by the Iowa Supreme Court.

The Assistant Ethics Counsel prosecutes cases before the Grievance Commission of the Iowa Supreme Court. This attorney also advises the Board on interpretation of the rules of professional conduct and proposed changes to the rules, and reviews and processes other disciplinary matters before the Board (including reinstatements of law licenses after suspension or revocation). Other duties include initial review of complaints at intake, investigation of complaints, preparation of pleadings, conducting discovery, trial of cases, drafting post-hearing pleadings, and all necessary appellate litigation. The Assistant Ethics Counsel also represents the Board in reciprocal discipline and other hearings and oral arguments before the Iowa Supreme Court. The position involves occasional overnight travel.
You must have graduated from an ABA accredited law school and been admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa.
Your law license must be in good standing and you should have no significant history of discipline.
You must be able to simultaneously handle multiple areas of responsibility with minimum supervision, properly prioritizing tasks and duties as dictated by changing demands.
You must possess strong verbal and written communications skills, plus the ability and willingness to provide quality customer service in a high tempo work environment.
You must possess strong oral and written communication skills, and have high-level knowledge of standard office software, including word-processing and presentation software, PDF generation programs, and commercial case-management platforms.
Five or more years of trial and appellate experience is preferred but not required.
You must be bondable; must possess high levels of personal and professional honesty and integrity, emotional maturity and stability, and a genuine interest in improving the legal profession and the administration of justice.
Lastly, you must have a valid Iowa driver's license and reliable transportation.
Additional Salary Information: This is a grade 37 position, with a minimum annual salary of $78,062. The position also includes the State of Iowa benefit package.
About Office of Professional Regulation
The Office of Professional Regulation oversees seven permanent Iowa Supreme Court commissions and boards in regulating the practice of law in Iowa. These commissions and boards handle attorney admissions, registration, mandatory continuing legal education, discipline, regulation of unauthorized practice of law, IOLTA grants and administrative support for the Client Security Fund. The Office of Professional Regulation also provides administrative support to two other boards, overseeing all aspects of the regulation of the state’s certified shorthand reporters and court interpreters.
