The Manager, Workplace Learning furthers the University's vision and goals to support students in becoming career-ready graduates - able to connect their talent, interests and education to the world of work through enriched educational experiences, work integrated learning, and experiential learning, for UBC undergraduate and graduate students both on and off campus. The incumbent leads the overall strategy for the development of workplace competencies through employment, undergraduate research, student leadership, volunteer, internship opportunities, and other experiential learning coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers for undergraduate and graduate students.
The incumbent contributes directly to the University's transformative learning goals through the expansion and strengthening of experiential and work-integrated learning experiences. The Manager, Workplace Learning is responsible for the development, strategic management, and evaluation of all aspects of UBC's Work Learn Program; stewards and develops strategic internal and external organizational relationships and; liaises with units and programs across the university to promote co-operative and collaborative work integrated learning experiences for students.
The Manager, Workplace Learning is a member of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers staff team. The Centre is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the Centre supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; and to research and explore career options. The Centre connects students to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.
Reporting to the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, the Manager, Workplace Learning, leads a team of career and experiential learning educators, program coordinators, event planners, administrative staff, student workers, interns and volunteers. As a member of an integrated unit leadership team, the incumbent will oversee the Centre's experiential and workplace learning competency development curriculum.
Design and leadership of the overall educational strategy for experiential and workplace learning, employment, student leadership, volunteer, and internship opportunities coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers for UBC students and alumni.
- Works in close partnership with the Director to develop comprehensive workplace learning and competency development strategies, which may include curricular and co-curricular programs and services. - Responsible for the strategic direction, design, operations, budget & financial analysis (approx. $5m), student learning outcomes, and evaluation of the Centre's campus based experiential and workplace learning programs, which engage over 3,000 students annually and include: the Work Learn Program, NSERC USRA, Work Learn International USRA, Student Directed Seminars, Arts Internship Program, student leadership training, and other emergent programs or initiatives arising within the University or with government and community partners. -Oversees the unit's strategy for providing professional development to employers of students, in order to strengthen and extend the student learning outcomes of work-integrated learning. - Works collaboratively with the Director and the unit leadership team to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to career development, workplace learning, and experiential learning. - Develops career programming and workplace learning curriculum to address the needs of diverse audiences, which includes ensuring comprehensive reflective practices are embedded into the Centre's programs, services and student roles to maximize student learning and career development outcomes across the unit's work.
2.Provides leadership and supervision to a team of professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Directs, guides, and coaches staff to achieve departmental goals and outcomes. - Sets objectives, manages outcomes, and determines resources. - Manages professional development planning. - Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for staff, volunteers, and students. - Recruits, hires, evaluates performance and terminates, if required.
Strategic planning, evaluation, and campus engagement.
- Develops and sustains research and evidenced-based understanding to inform and evaluate the University's approaches to workplace learning for students. Including: student learning outcomes, alumni outcomes and employability data, employer feedback and evidence of student preparedness, labour market and industry trends, workplace learning outcomes, relevant legislation, and work experiences of UBC students and alumni. - Develops and oversees outcomes assessment and program evaluation to measure the impact of programs and services in terms of student learning, career outcomes, and service to departments and Faculties. - Develops and implements a strategy to share results and raise awareness of the impact of workplace learning in developing career ready graduates. - Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and faculties; Department Heads and Associate Deans, community professionals & community groups, employers, students, and alumni. - Works with the Director and leadership team in the development and assessment of the strategic goals of the unit. - Manages operational budgets and allocates resources in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the unit's objectives. - In collaboration with Student Communications and the Centre's leadership team, provides strategic content direction for career development and workplace learning content of the website and other communications channels. - Manages, sets goals, and evaluates all programs and services in consideration of the Vice President Students (VPS) Student Experience Framework and the VPS service standards: respectful, accurate, and responsive. - Acts as a designate for the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, as required. - Participates on University and departmental committees.
Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
The Manager, Workplace Learning represents students and the University in a variety of internal and external venues. Incorrect decisions/ judgment will directly affect UBC's reputation with government and community partners. Ineffective budget planning and management will have significant operational, learning, and reputational consequences. Incorrect decisions will have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, activities of campus departments employing students, and the reputation of the Faculties and the University.
The incumbent works with the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, toward the achievement of established strategic goals and objectives. Recommendations are normally accepted as accurate and feasible. Work is reviewed for achievement of University goals, and soundness of advice and judgment.
Provides outstanding leadership to, and management of, a staff group that includes managers, professional staff, student staff, and volunteers. Leads cross-functional project teams. Hires and manages contract work performed by outside suppliers. As part of the leadership team, contributes to attracting, developing, and retaining top talent for the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree required. Minimum of six years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience supervising, coaching, and mentoring professional staff. Prior higher education experience an asset. Experience designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness and outcomes required. Familiarity with design thinking an asset. Experience with the design, delivery and management of work-integrated learning programs. Demonstrated experience in supervising and managing staff, preferably in a higher education environment. Experience developing online courses and/or experience with Canvas Learning Management System an asset. Demonstrated ability to strategically design, implement, and evaluate experiential learning programs and educational curricula. Deep and masterful knowledge of workplace and experiential learning pedagogy and practice. Ability to strategically manage a complex budget with multiple funding sources. Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop and sustain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, volunteers, and community members. Ability to delegate, lead, motivate, coach and train staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services. Excellent written and oral communication skills. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students and staff and actively promote inclusion. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Further language abilities an asset. Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new systems. Knowledge of career, employment and job search strategies used by students and alumni. Knowledge of Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment. Familiarity with human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices. Knowledge of current trends in higher education, career development, graduate employability, and local, national, and international labour markets. Ability to work under pressure of critical deadlines. Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students. Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision making structures is an asset. Valid BC Drivers License and own transportation required. Ability to incorporate a varied workday (i.e. attend a variety of evening and weekend events year round).
