Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Control Technician to perform journey level work in the operation, inspection, testing, servicing and maintenance of mechanical, pneumatic, electronic and direct digital controls (DDC) for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) of the complex building systems.
Job Duties may include:
Troubleshoot and resolve operation and maintenance problems of complex building environmental control systems that are both pneumatic and DDC
Install, modify, diagnose, test, repair, calibrate and operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic equipment in HVAC systems
Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment
Suggest operation strategies for campus HVAC systems to ensure continuous and reliable service
May operate vehicles such as University vans and trucks to transport tools and equipment to various worksites
Respond to emergency situations such as HVAC outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, and disruption to life-safety systems
Perform the work in accordance with applicable safety rules and environmental regulatory requirements and maintain records as required according to environmental requirements
Work with other trades to troubleshoot and repair system failures related to all aspects of the HVAC equipment and systems
Work with the preventive maintenance program on equipment, components, and systems
Assist with record keeping for the preventive maintenance program of the environmental control systems
Maintain and update system schematics through red line system changes and create if necessary, mechanical, pneumatic, and DDC system schematics
Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, Ideas Systems)
Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs), and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Work with Campus Engineering, Capital Projects Office, contractors, Facilities Services trades, building occupants, and other clients as necessary for scheduled and planned required work
Operate a variety of hand and power tools
Perform other duties as assigned

Completion of a four-year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee;
OR four years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems.
Vocational or trade school training in control mechanisms may be substituted, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years.
Additional requirements include:
Must be conversant with at least one of the following DDC control systems: Johnson Controls Metasys (PMI or ADS/ADX), Siemens Apogee, Alerton (IBEX or BACtalk)
Experience in basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and work order programs and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook OR willingness to learn and use computers
Experience working with complex building environmental control systems, a wide variety of systems, and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, and systems
Ability to read and interpret blue prints related to building HVAC systems
Must be strong team player and must be able to work independently and as a team member
Possess excellent skills in building a working crew harmony
Must possess excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills
Must be able to communicate professionally and appropriately with clients, staff and students
Have knowledge and understand safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Five or more years of experience as an HVAC control technician working with complex building and laboratory environmental control systems, with a wide variety of systems and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, systems, etc.
Experience with fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets
Have experience working independently as an HVAC control technician for a licensed HVAC contractor or as an employee of a public agency
Detailed knowledge in working with Siemens Apogee DDC systems.
Ability to perform Administrator duties for the existing HVAC DDC servers (Johnson Controls, Siemens, and Alerton)
Demonstrated ability to work with clients during building ventilation system shutdowns and inconveniences
Experience in basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and work order programs and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Ability to work independently to improvise necessary system component repairs
Valid driver's license recognized by the state of Washington
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Regular and predictable attendance is required. May be required to accept variable work shift.
Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours.
Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment.
Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
Approved footwear must be provided at the employee's expense and worn on the job.
Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility (ARCF), and the University of Washington Medical Center.
