Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County CAMP WYOMOCO has an opening for a temporary, seasonal, Summer Camp Horseback Riding Director for the 2019 season (late-June through mid-August 2019).
Under the direction of the Leadership Team the Horseback Riding Program Director will be responsible for general day-to-day delivery and organization of all horseback riding programming. Horseback Riding Program Director is also responsible for the management of the horseback riding facility and equipment including barns, stables, arenas and care of the horses and horse feed. Camp Wyomoco rents up to 20 horses for the season. During Summer Camp Week #1 Horse campers may bring their own horses increasing total horses on-site to as many as 80.
This position will also play a role in the leadership of the staff as a whole; maintaining morale, positive lines of communication, and finding teaching moments for continuous staff and camper growth. This is a residential camp and staff is required to live on camp property during sessions.
Physical requirements include bending, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, stretching, walking, running, and swimming. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity required to manipulate Horseback Riding equipment and horseback Riding activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and communicate with staff and campers. Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Must operate with daily exposure to the cold, heat, rain, sun, and varying other weather conditions, as well as under irregular working hours in a camp environment. Program Responsibilities Plan, direct, and supervise a safe, instructional and fun horseback riding program. - Write lesson plans that meet overall camp and program goals. - Evaluate riding abilities of campers and staff. - Deliver creative riding program activities. - Set daily and session schedules for the horse program. Train and supervise Horseback Riding staff - Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. - Train Horseback Riding and Counselor staff in their horseback riding responsibilities. - Schedule and supervise Horseback Riding staff to provide a safe and high-quality program. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the horseback riding program area - Set up horseback riding area prior to and during staff training. - Teach and monitor proper use of equipment. - Manage daily care of the camp's horses. - Conduct initial, mid-season and end-of-season inventory. - Check equipment weekly and make (or request) repairs and record in log book. - Review horses for health needs, behavior issues, and tack needs. - Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, good repair and record in log book. - Submit orders for equipment and supplies by established deadlines ensuring timely arrival of materials. - Assist in packing all materials and supplies at the end of the season. Participate fully and enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Help maintain order during all camp activities. Work effectively with the entire staff team, regardless of backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions. Provide all necessary records, attendance data, lesson plans, and other items as required by the designated deadlines. Assist with solving problems and resolve conflicts that arise utilizing appropriate policies and procedures. Participate as a member of the camp team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. Assist in the planning, organization, and facilitation of theme days, special events, and rainy day events. Assist leadership team and staff with effectively handling inappropriate behavior and recognizing hazard situations. Maintain open but professional communication with staff, parents, and campers. Assist with enforcing all policies and procedures. Work closely with Leadership team to insure camper and staff safety in all activities. Promote practices that seek to reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as much as possible. Act as a positive role model for campers, volunteers, and staff. Maintain a high level of communication and develop an excellent rapport with the leadership team, staff, volunteers, parents/families and campers. Be familiar with all emergency/crisis response procedures. Thoroughly understand camp emergency action plans and help implement procedures if/when necessary. Complete First Aid Forms and Incident Report Forms when applicable. EEO/EPO, Health and Safety, and Other Duties Arrive on time for all scheduled activities and duties. Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. Maintain a clean, professional, well-groomed appearance while on duty keeping in compliance with the Association and Camp Dress Code Policy at all times. Observe curfew and/or quite hours each night. Keep all relationships on a platonic basis during camp hours and camp season. Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard. Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required. Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants at all times. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries, maintain a safe environment, and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified. Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards. Assist Supervisor with implementation of camp crisis management plan and/or emergency management procedures as required. Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with staff, campers, parents, volunteers and the public. Interact with campers, staff, parents, families, and the general public in a professional manner at all times. Ensure complete confidentiality of sensitive information regarding campers and staff at all times. Carry out assignments and other duties as directed by supervisor.Required Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent. At least 21 years of age Current certification in horseback riding or equivalent. Prior supervision of a horseback riding program. Experience in supervising horseback riding staff. Previous experience working with children preferably with horses Desire and ability to work with children outdoors. Valid NYS drivers' license and ability to meet Motor Vehicle Records screening standards. Current certification in first aid and CPR preferred. Ability to schedule and supervise staff. Ability to live on camp property for the duration of the camp employment period. Evenings and weekends are necessary. (Camp sessions run Sunday through Friday). Ability to meet acceptable background check standards. Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends. Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English. Ability to work long hours, in an outdoor/indoor setting, requiring regular physical activity such as walk extensively on uneven terrains in all types of weather. Outstanding communication and teamwork skills.
