Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a national leader in unaccompanied child (UAC) migrant and refugee issues. Launched in 2008, KIND is dedicated to a world in which children’s rights and well-being are protected as they migrate alone in search of safety. Through a proven model and innovative partnerships, KIND staff and our pro bono attorney partners at law firms, corporations, and law schools nationwide represent unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children in their deportation proceedings by providing high quality legal services. Together, we ensure that no child stands in court alone.

KIND is seeking a Grant Manager  

Position Description & Responsibilities KIND seeks a full-time Grant Manager to join its four-person Development team. Reporting to the Vice President for Public Outreach and Strategic Development, the Grant Manager will develop, write and submit letters grant proposal and reports in coordination with program and development staff. They will coordinate among departments to ensure a smooth flow of information, and to facilitate a thoughtful, strategic relationship between the Development, Programs, Finance, and leadership teams.

Proposal Development and Grant Writing

 

  • Work with Program staff to develop and write letters of inquiry, proposals, and impact reports, and additionally with Finance to develop program budgets and budget reports;
  • Work with Programs and Finance to gather data, information, and supporting documentation required to prepare and submit funding requests and grant reports.

 

Prospect Research and Cultivation

 

  • Conduct prospect research to identify new foundation, institutional (i.e. U.N., international agencies) and government funding opportunities that align with the organization’s mission, initiatives, and programs.
  • Communicate with foundations and other institutional funders

  

Grants Management 

 

  • Track and manage all proposal/reporting deadlines, submissions, and status updates within Raiser’s Edge.
  • Inform relevant staff of awarded foundation grants or government contracts, deliverables, and reporting requirements and deadlines.

 

Other

 

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of KIND’s strategic plan, initiatives, and programs.
  • Stay informed of current issues and trends in immigration, youth services, and philanthropy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

 

  • Strong writer with proven ability to develop high-level, compelling proposals with a theory of change lens; ability to synthesize complex ideas and align them with funder priorities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong project management skills in planning, prioritizing, and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Must be flexible and open to changing needs and priorities.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and communications skills.
  • High level of confidence and ability to work independently as well as within a team structure; proven ability to work well with diverse groups of people in different departments and functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge (or similar donor relations database system).

 

 

Educational and Experience Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 3 years of grant writing experience required, preferably in the legal and/or social services sector;
  • Experience and comfort with budgets and quantitative data is preferred.
  • Experience with government contracting processes and various funding streams (federal, state, city) a plus.
