The Cooperative Institute for Marine Research invites applications for a full-time, 1.0 FTE, 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate (Post Doc) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
The Research Associate (Post Doc) will hold an independent research role among a larger research team comprised of researchers from Oregon State University (OSU) College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), OSU cooperative Institute of Marine Resources Studies (CIMRS), and NOAA Fisheries, working cooperatively to understand the connectivity between changes in basin scale ocean conditions, regional winds and local upwelling, and marine ecosystem productivity. A relatively high-frequency (biweekly to monthly) 20+ year time series of physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic metrics collected along the continental shelf and slope (2-46 km from shore) off Newport, OR, will serve as the foundation for studying and understanding the impacts of climate variability and ecosystem response.
The dynamics controlling local productivity in the coastal ocean are complex and include processes that are not driven entirely by alongshore winds, but also by basin-scale variability in winds and transport, variability in source waters for upwelling, and variability in local conditions such as density stratification prior to the onset of upwelling-favorable winds. Therefore, understanding how both basin scale climate variability and local upwelling interact to affect primary and secondary production is important for understanding how physical processes translate to biological productivity. The goal of this project is to advance our understanding of the influence of both basin-scale forcing and coastal upwelling on nutrients, phytoplankton, copepods, and krill, using existing datasets.
The postdoc is expected to engage in innovative research, collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team including other postdocs and graduate and undergraduate students, produce scholarly publications, and participate in outreach to government and academic partners. The position is located jointly at CEOAS, OSU, Corvallis, OR and the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC), Newport, OR. The postdoc is expected to maintain regular communication in person and remotely with investigators at both locations, for example making approximately weekly visits to the location where the postdoc is not resident, including attending seminars.
The primary advisors and mentors for the postdoc will be Melanie Fewings, (OSU/CEOAS), Kym Jacobson (NOAA Fisheries), and Jennifer Fisher (OSU/CIMRS).
Requires PhD or terminal degree and experience in the academic discipline/unit.
- PhD in physical or biological oceanography or related discipline. - Evidence of: – scholastic achievements in publications and scientific presentations – self-motivation and ability to work independently – effective work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds - In accordance with the Department of Commerce Background Investigation policy, the incumbent must successfully obtain the appropriate security clearance within 90 days of the employment start date.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the criminal history check requirement.
Incumbent will have access to office space and computer for data analysis and preparation proposals and manuscripts.
